The firm was founded in 1860 by Henry Escritt who later in 1900 formed a partnership with Cecil Barrell. In the same year, G W Golding commenced practising in the town and established the firm of Goldings. Escritt & Barrell and Goldings practised independently for some 105 years before joining together in 2006.
